When he was 19, Ueda tried to enter the New Japan Dojo, but was rejected. He trained with Animal Hamaguchi and later moved to the ZERO-1 Dojo, where he debuted in October 2007. In February 2008, Ueda changed his ring name to "Shito Ueda," a name inspired to the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion.
